ChristmasMagic_bookcoverThe holiday season is upon us, and one of my favorite things of retail at this time of year (yes, it can be enjoyable!) is seeing the new seasonal titles.

The Christmas Magic by Lauren Thompson is a simple and quaint look at the life of Santa Claus on Christmas Eve, as he readies himself for this most important night. “When the nights are longest and the stars shine brightest,” Santa starts his preparation. He gathers the reindeer, polishes the sleigh and tends to the reindeer gear, gets dressed, checks the list, and finally packs his bag. The reindeer gather and wait for the Christmas magic to arrive, so they may take off in the night.

ChristmasMagic_Book_Spread_oneThe writing here by Lauren Thompson is poetic and delicate. A departure from her Little Quack series, the text is striking and clear, and the images by Jon J Muth illustrate the quiet world of Santa Claus in soft winter colors, with an almost folk motif. There’s some beautiful images here. I love the smiling reindeer who’s depicted next to Santa on several pages, waiting eagerly for the magic to arrive. I love this book for its portrayal of an elegant and simple Christmas, a sharp contrast to the commercialism Christmas usually bears.

When the magic arrives, the result is beautiful, and is an expanded version of the book’s cover. Muth paints it so well, with a few snowflakes and just an eChristmasMagic_Book_Spread_threendless sky.

“And around him, the night begins to thrum with the magic, the kind of magic that makes reindeer fly.”

Publisher summary: Far, far North, when the nights are longest and the stars shine brightest, Santa begins to prepare for his big night of giving. He gathers his reindeer, feeds them parsnips and berries, and polishes his bells and his sled. Then lovingly, he chooses toys for every child in the world. For Santa loves them all, and he knows what each child at heart wants most. Then, with the thrum of magic that makes reindeers fly, he spreads the Christmas joy and warmth throughout the world–as he always has — and always will until the end of time. From best-selling author Lauren Thompson, and Caldecott Honor Artist Jon J Muth.
